[I.], also Baron Mendip [G.B.] and BARON DOVER [U.K.], grandson and h., being s. and h. of George James Welbore (Agar-Ellis), Baron Dover, of Dover, co. Kent (so cr., v.p., 20 June 1831), by Georgians da, of George (Howard), Gth Earl op Carlisle, which Lord Dover was only s. and h. ap. of the last Viscount Clifden. He was b. 25 Feb. 1825 ; sue. his Father, as Baron Dover, 10 July 1833 ; was a Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince Consort till 1852. He m. 23 Feb. 1861, Eliza Horatia Frederics, da. of Frederick Charles William Seymour, by his 2nd wife, Augusta, da. of Frederick (Hervey), 1st Marquess of Bristol. He d. 20 Feb. 1866, at Dover House, Whitehall, Midx. Will pr. 13 March 1866, uikW .£70,000. His widow, who was b. 16 July 1833, was one of the Ladies of the Bed- chamber, 1867-72 ; extra Lady of the Bedchamber, 1872 ; V.A., 3rd class. She m. 12 Oct 1875, at St. John's, Wilton Road, Midx., Walter George Stirling, sometime Lieut. R.A., and was living 1887. IV. 18G6. 4- Henry George (Agar-Ellis), Viscount Clipden op Gowran [I., 1781], Lord Clifden, Baron of Gowran p. 1776], also Baron Mendd? [G.B., 1794] and Baron Dover [U.K., 1831], only s. and h. He was 6. 3 Sep. 1863 at Dover House, Whitehall, Midx. ; and was ed. at Eton. Family Estates. — These, in 18S3, consisted of 4,774 acres in co. Northampton ; 2,976 in Bucks ; 2,537 in Somerset ; 1,107 in Oxon, and 36 in Midx. Total, in England, 11,130 acres, worth £14,594 a year. Also 35,288 acres in co. Kilkenny ; 821 in co. Dublin ; 97S in co. Kfldare and 500 in co. Meath. Total, in Ireland, 37,587 acres worth £24,321 a year. Grand total, 49,017 acres, worth £3S,915 a year. CLIFFORD, or DE CLIFFORD. Barony by 1, Robert de Clifford,^) grandson and h. of Roger writ. de Clifford, a feudal Baron, of the co. of Hereford, being s. and h. of another Roger (who d. v. p.) by Isabel, da. and coheir of Robert de I. 1299. VrpoNT, of Brougham Castlo, Westmorland, Hereditary Sheriff of Westmorland, (by Isabel, sister to Richard Fitz John), was b. about Easter 1274/5, being aged 7 years on the death of his Father 6 Nov. 1282 ; sue. his grandfather in 1286 ; and, in 1291, inherited a large share of the estates of the great family of Vipont, in right of his Mother (i.e. Brougham Castle, co. West- morland, the Hereditary Sheriffdom of that county, &c.) and was, on the death of his great uncle, Richard Fitz John abovenamed, 1297, found one of his coheirs. He served in the wars with Scotland ; was Justice in Eyre north of Trent, 1297 ', Gov. of Nottingham Castle, 1298. On 29 Dec. (1299) 28 Ed. I. he was sum. to Pari, as a Baron (LORD DE CLI FFORD) by writ directed " Rob' to dc Clifford," and he continued to be so sum. till 26 Nov. (1313) 7 Ed. II. He was Capt. Gen. of the Marches of Scotland, 1299 ; was one of the Barons whoso seal was affixed to the celebrated letter to the Pope, in 1300, being therein described as " Castcll<inus( h ) dc Appelby." By Edward I ho was granted the manor of Skelton, co. Cumberland ; Skipton Castle, co. York, &c. ; while by Edward II (I. Ed. II) he was made, for a few months in 1307, Lord Marshal of England, and, in 1308, Warden of the Scotch marches. He m. Maud, 2nd and yst. da. of Thomas de Clare, probably that Thomas who was 2nd s. of Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford. He d 25 June 1314, being Blain at the battle of Baunockburn, and was probably bur. (with his mother) at Shap Abbey, Westmorland( c ). Will pr. 18 Sep 1314. His widow m. Robert de Wells of co. Lincoln, before (1320-21) 14 Ed. II., when she was found heir to her nephew Thomas, only s. and h. of Richard (do Clare) Lord de Clare.C) She d. (1320-27) I Ed. III. ( l ) The name of this pre-eminently illustrious family is taken from the small village (population under 500) of Clifford, near Hay, co. Hereford, their ancient possession.
