He was 1st s. and h. of Vice- Admiral Sir Tliomas Francis Frkmanti.k, G.O.B., Baron of the Austrian Empire, by Elizabeth, da. and coheir of Rieliard Wynne, of Falkinghatn, (so. Lincoln ; was b. 11 March 1798, and bap. at St. G™. Han. Sq. ; sue. his father, 19 Dec. 1819 ; matric. at Oxford (Oriel Coll.), 19 March 1816: B.A. (1st class tnath. and 2nd class classics ), 1819 ; was er. a Baronet, 14 Aug. 1S21 ("lit of respect to the memory of his father) with rem. to the heirs male of the body "f his father, whose Austrian title of Baron he and his issue were authorised to bear by Royal lie. 22 Jan. 1822 ; M.P. for Buckingham (in 7 Paris.), 1827-46 ; Sec. to the Treasury, 1834-35, and 1841-44 ; Sec. at War, 1844-45 ; Chief Sec. for Ireland, 1845- 46 ; Deputy Chairman and afterwards Chairman to the Board of Customs, 1847-73, being raised to the peerage in 1874 as above stated. He m. 24 Nov. 1824, Louisa Elizabeth, 1st da. of Field Marshal Sir George Nugent, Bart., G.C.B., by Maria, da. of Cortlandt Skinner. She d. (from poison accidentally taken) at Swanbourne, 17 Aug. 1875, aged 71. Family estates. —These, in 1883, consisted of 2,683 acres in Bucks and Glouc, worth £5,675 a year. Principal Residence. — Swanbourne, near Winslow, Bucks. COTTINGTON OF HAMWORTH. Barony. "Francis Cottington, Bart., Chancellor and Under I 1631 Treasurer of the Exchequer," was,* 10 July 1631, er. "BARON COTTINGTON OF HAMWORTH [i.e. Hanwovth], co. Midx."(») He 1(; ko was 4th of PI"!' C., of Godmanston, Somerset, by Jane, da. of iOJA. Thomas BlFLETE, of that county ; was b. about 1579 j Clerk of the Council to James I ; Sec. to Charles, Prince of Wales ; was er. a Baronet, 16 Feb. 1622/3 ; M.P. for Camelford, 1624-25; for Bossiuey, 1625, and for Saltash, 1628-29 ; Chancellor and Under Treasurer of the Exchequer to Charles I ; and being made " Ambassador" to the Court at Madrid for negotiating a peace, was, in 1631, raised to the pet-rage as above stated. One of Commissioners of Treasury during the King's absence in Scotland ; Master of the Wards, 1635. He remained loyal to his King, and went into exile (whence he never returned) with Charles II. He in. in 1622, Anne, widow of Sir Robert Buett, da. of Sir William Meredith, of London. She (/. at Charing Cross, 22 and was liur. 23 Feb. 1633/4. in Westm. Abbey. Fun. certifi. He d. 19 June 1652, in his 74th year, at Valladolid, in Spain, and was bur. in the Jesuits Church there, whence his " bones " were removed and reinterred, 24 June 1678, in Westm. Abbey. M.I. Will dat. 16 June 1652, pr. 15 Aug. 1666 by his great nephew, there having been previously, 3 Dec. 1660, an admon. to a creditor. On his death, s.p.s., his honours became cxtinc.t.Q') " Francis Cottington " cr. a Baron [Qy. BARON COTTINGTON], in 1716, by the titular James III. See Vol. i, p. 59, note "b," under " Jacobite COUPAR [co. Angus]. Barony [S.] i. The Hon. James Elphinstone, (godson of King James I 1 607. VI f s - V) 2nd an(1 y at - s- o{ Jamea (Elphinstone), 1st Lord Balmeiunooh [S.j, and his only s. by his 2nd wife, Marjory, da. of Hugh Maxwell, of Tealing, was cr. a Lord of Pari., 20 Dec. 1607, as LORD COUPAR [S].
