BARON OCKINGHAM [i.e. Wokingham], co. Berks, EARL OF KENDAL, co. Westmorland and DUKE OF CUMBERLAND; Ch. Com. of Greenwich Hospital, 1695; chief mourner at the funeral of William III, on whose death, S March 1701/2, his consort became Sovereign as Queen Anne. In 1702 he was made Generalissimo of all the Forces, Lord High Admiral, Lord Warden of the Cinque ports, &c. F.R.S., &G. He d., s.p.s., at Kensington Palace, 2S Oct. and was bur. 13 Nov. 1708 in Westm. Abbey, when all his honours became extinct. He resigned all his military commands, after concluding the convention of Closterseven with the French, signed 10 Sep. 1757 (whereby 38,000 Hanoverians laid down their arms), a treaty considered very humiliatiug by the King.
