(") This is one of the few English peerages conferred by James II which (not reckoning titles of inferior rank granted in the same patent) were but ten in all. These are 1 Dukedom, i.e., Berwick {Filz-James) ; 1 Mnrqucssate, i.e., Powis {Herbert) ; 3 Earldoms, i.e., Dorchester (Sedley), Derwentwater (Fadclyffc), and Stafford {Howard) ; 4 Baronies, i.e., Dover {Jermyn), Churchill, Jeffreys, Waldegrave, and Griffin. Sec below sub " Dundee," as to Scotch Peerages conferred by that monarch ; and as to Irish Peerages so conferred see vol. iv, sub " Galway." ( b ) The Peerage writers have one and all (including even Mr. Doyle, in 1880), followed "Sandford" [p. 054], who states the name of this Peer to be (that of his father) Francis. His own will, the will of his father, and of his brother Francis, &c, clearly prove this to be an error, as apparently are the dates given by Sandford to the birtliB of the children of this Earl. ( c ) "With whom she lived in her husband's lifetime." See P. Le Neve's memoranda in " Top. and Gen." hi, 154. No mention of her is made in her husband's will.
