York, by Anue, 1st da. and coheir of Samuel Buck, of New Grange, in that co. ; was J. 20 Dec. 1800, at l'ontefract ; bap. at Hemsworth ; ed. at Eton and at Oriel Coll., Oxford ; B.A. and Double 1st Class, 1821 ; M.A., 1824 ; was M.P. for Great Grimsby, 1826-31. for Warehani, 1831-32; for Halifax, 1832-65, and for Ripen, 1865- 66; was Joint Sec. to the Treasury, 1832-31 ; Sec. to the Admiralty, 1835-39 ; Chan-cellos of the K.xc'Heqdei!, 1846-52; B.C., 1846; sue his father in the Baronetcy (cr. 1781) and family estates 31 Dee. 1816; President of the Board of Control for India, 1852-55 ; First Lord of the Admiralty, 1855-5S ; G.C.B, (Civil), 19 June 1856. Sec. of State and Pres. of the Council for India, 1819-66, beiug raised to the peerage, as abovestated, Feb. 1866 ; Loud Pwvv Seal, 1870-74, &c. He m. 30 July 1S29, Mary, 5th da. of Charles (Grey), 2d Haul Obey, by Mary Elizabeth, da. of William Brabazon (I'onsonhy), 1st Baron Ponsonby of Lm-ikjlly. She, who was b. 3 May ISO/, and who was C.I. d. 6 July 1884. He d. 8 Aug. 1S85, in his 85th year, at Hickletou, co. York. Will dat. 16 April 18S0, pr. at WakeGeld, Feb. 18S6, over £55,000. II. 18S5. 2. Charles Lindley (Wood), Viscouxt Halifax of Monk Bretton, 1st s. and h., J. 7 June 1839, and bap. at St. Martina in the fields ; ed. at Eton and at Ch. Ch., Oxford; B.A., 1S65 ; M.A., 1866 ; Groom of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales, 1S62-70 ; one of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. He m., 22 April 1S69, at St. Paul's, Knightsbridge, Mid.x., Agnes Elizabeth, only da. of William Reginald (Couutknay), 11th Earl of Devon, by Elizabeth, da. of Hugh (Foktescue), 1st Earl Fortescue. She, who was 4. 1 May 1838, became heii to her br. the 12th Earl, on his death 15 Jan. 1891. Family Estates. — These, in 1883, consisted of 10,142 acres in the East and West Ridings of Yorkshire, worth £12,169 a year. Principal Residence. Hickletou Hall, near Doncaster, co. York. HALKERTOUN.
