He was subsequently P.O. ; Gov. of Dunbartou Castle; Lieut, of the South of Scotland during the King's absence in 1589, and was (under the style of " Earl of Arran ") cr., 17 April 1599,(') at Holyrood (with great ceremony) " MARQUIS OF HAMILTON, Eaul of Arran, Lord Aven,^) &c."( c ) [S.] He m. about 1580 Margaret, Dow. Countess of Cassillis [S.J, da. of John (Lyon), 7th Lord Glamis [S.J, by Janet, da. of Robert Keith, Master of Marischal. He d. (before his elder br. James, Earl of Arran and Lord Hamilton [S.] above mentioned) 12 April 1604, aged about 70. His widow was living 1616. J and (J. James (Hamilton), Marquess of Hamilton, fcc. [S.J only s.and h., b. 1589, styled Lord Een ( d ) from 1599 until, on 12 April 1004, he sue. his father in the Marquessate [S.] He received a grant of the lands of the dissolved Abbey of Aberbrothwick eo. Forfar which were erected into u temporal Lordship in his favour wit/i the title of a lord of PartotmmW LOUD ABEliBKOTHYVICK [S.], (") In Nisbet's Heraldry,'" vol. ii, p. 108, is a full account of the elaborate ceremony at this creation. The Earl of Hnutly [S.J was at the same time cr. " Marquis of Himtly, Earl of Enzie, Lord Gordon of Badenoch, ice." [S.J The Mar- quessate of Iluntly was, however, postponed to that of Hamilton, tho' the Earldom of Huutly was of greater antiquity than that of Arran, the right to which last wa3 apparently in James, the elder (but insane) brother of the grantee. The grantee was, however, styled Earl of Arran when introduced lor creation and was (with Huntly) called one of the " tiro Bark in their respective robes and crow us " brought before the King for that purpose. ( b ) This seems to be the first authentic appearance (in the house uf Hamilton) of the Sarong of Aven [S.] It is doubtful when it was created. In the Garter plates of 1623 and 1630 uf the 2d and 3d Marquesses each is styled " Earl of Arran, Huron Eren and Arerdalc" [i.e., " Anen and Ave/idale," in Scotland] besides "Earl of Cambridge and Baron Ennerdale " [iu Euglaud.J The creation of the Scotch Barony of Aven may have token place with tlie Earldom of Arrau (on 11 Aug. 1503) but (more probably) was (on 17 Aug. 1599) with the Marquessate of Hamilton. The fact of James Stewart having been cr. Lord of Avanc [Aven] and Hamilton when, iu 1581, he was cr. Earl of Arran isiu favour of the former surmise. On the other hand the fact that the 2d Earl of Arran (afterwards the Regent) is described in an act of Pari. [S.] 13 March 1542/3, as "James, Earl of Arran, Lord Hamilton," somewhat militates against his having Ray other Baronies vested iu Mm. With respect to the Barony of Evendalc or Af endale [S.], "on 11 July 1611, the [2 n(l ] Marquis of Hamilton got a grant of the Barony of Evandalc and the township of Lanark, together with a small Barony of Pale Thornton. This seems the first mention of Evandale, with the Marquisate; it having been granted to the Marquis on the resignation of Jac. Hamilton de Kvandaltf, ami Thomas Hamilton de Byres, Lord Advocate." But, some thirty years later, iu the grant of the Dukedom, Sc., on 12 April 1043, " Avcndalc * is omitted, on which Lyon King (as above) remarks " I think the family must have dropped that title as I have not met with it, except in the charter of 1611 above mentioned. They probably preferred Even which was older." ( c ) What titles are comprised in this, "&&," and whether the titles of "Earl of Arhan, Lord Aven, &c.," are recognitions of ancient titles or fresh creations of this date is doubtful. See note " b " just above. The ; ' StC." includes veiy probably the Lordship of Aberbrothwick [Aberbrothok or Arbroath] co. Forfar held by Lord John as " Commendator " of that Abbey, he beiug, from 1593 to 1599, styled iu the Great Seal Register, Johannes, dominus Hamilton el Aberbrothok," tho' this com- mendatorship was not erected into a temporal Lordship till 1608. ( d ) This was obviously for tho purpose of distinguishing him from his father's elder brother, James, the insane Earl of Arrau abovenamed, who appears to have been styled till his death in 1609 (tho' not officially recognised as) Earl of Arrau. (°) As he apparently was already a Lord of 'Pad. by inheritance this creation seems curious. Perhaps he would thus have been more easily enabled to resign (with consent of the Crown) this new dignity to a younger sou, it being a distinct creation from any of his inherited titles.
