[SJ ; was one of the chief rescuers of the King 1, '- j0 - from the "Cowrie Conspiracy" 5 Aug. lfiOO, for which he was Knighted 12 Nov. 1600; (a j admitted to the Inner Temple, 1604; obtained the Barony of Kaatbarns, in co. Haddington, and was rr. 11 June 1606, VISCOUNT OF HADDINGTON and LORD RAMSAY OF BARNS [S]. He had, 2S Aug. 1609, grant of the lands late belonging to the dissolved Abbey of Melrose and was, 25 Aug. 1615, c>: LORD RAMSAY OF MELROSE [S] " :ohim, his heirs male and assigns whatever." This last named peerage he resigned in favour of his brother, George Ramsay, abovenamcd. who was accordingly, on 25 Aug. 1618. er. Lord liamsav of Melrose [S].* He was subsequently, 22 Jan. 1620 1, rr. an Emrlish peer as BARON OF KINGSTON-UPON-THAMKS, co. Surrey, and KARL OF HOLDERNESSE. He nr. firstly, 20 Feb. 1607/8. at the Chapel Koy.il, White- hall, Elizabeth, da. of Robert (Ratcufvr), 6th Eabi, of Sdssbx, by his first wife. Bridget, da. of Sir Charles MORRISON. She d. 6 Dec. 1618. He m. secondly, about July, 1621. Martha, sister of Charles, 1st Viscount Cru.KN [I] da. of Sir William Cokayne, of Boshtou, eo. Northampton, sometime (1619), Lord Mayor of London, by Mary, da. of Richard Morris, of London, sometime Master of the Ironmongers' Company. He d. s.p.s., and was bur. 2S Feb. 1625/6, at Westminster Abbey, when all hit honours became extinct. Will dat. C Jan. 1625/6, pr. (after contest). 16 Feb. 1626/7. His widow, who was /'tip. 26 May 160o, at St. Peter-le-poor, London, w/. there 18 April 1627, Montagu Bertie, tbea >Ujltd Lord WllXOOOHBT DK Eresry, after- wards (1642). 2nd EaRL of Linpsey, who <l. 25 July 1666. She d. July 1641, and was bur. at Edenhani, co. Lincoln, M I. [Charli.s Ramsay, styled "Baron of Kingston" ( c ),2d but only butt. s. and h. ftp, by first wife ; bap. 17 May 1618, at the Chapel Royal, Whitehall", Charles. Prince: of Wales, being oue of his sponsors. He d. v.p. an infant, anil was fair. 25 March, 1621, at Westminster Abbey]. IT. 1644, " Prince Rupert [Duke of Uavaria], Count Palatine to or the Rhine," was n: 21 Jan. 1043/4, EARL OF HOLDERNESSE, 1682. Co. York, and DI KK OF CUMBERLAND.
