(<) She d. b.p. 3 Feb. 1717 8. In Macky's " Characters" [1707 •'], he is thus spoken of :- "Is bravo in his person ; hath been under some unhappy characters anil circumstances, which hath hindered his advancement, both in the last reign and in this ; he was against King WiUliam's ministry, and takes all occasions to shew it : very fair comploxioned, poor, past 40 years old." (°) He "rendered signal service to the cause of Roman Catholic primary educa- tion." being, 1S69-77, chairman of the " Catholic Poor Schools Committee," and as such, setting on foot " the Catholic education crisis fund," subscribing £5,000 himself thereto, and obtaining £10,000 from his nephew the Duke of Norfolk, and ilO.OOO from his son-in-law, the Marquess of Bote ; " 7,000 scholars were thus added to the Roman Catholic schools in England, at a cost of at least £350,000."
