Fife, was h. about 1565 ; sac. his father 1586 ; Gent, of the Bedchamber [S.], 1591 j heritable baillie of Jedburgh Forest, and was o 2 Feb. 1621/2, LORD JEDBURGH [S.J with rem. to his heirs male and successors in the family of Fernihirst( b ) bearing the name and arms of Kerr. Ho m. Ann. 1st da. of Andrew Stewart, Master of Ochitree, s. and h. ap. of Andrew, 2d Lord Ochiltree [S.] He d. s.p.tn.s.( c ) 1631. II. 1631. 2. Alexander Kerr, furmorhj Kirkai.dy, de jure Lord Jediiurgh [S.], but never assumed that title, nephew and h. male. He was s. and h. of William Kerr, a /towards Kirkaldy, of Grange afsd., by Elizabeth.C 1 ) da. of John (Lyon), Sth Lord Glamis [S.], which William was br. of the whole blood to the last named Lord. Hi who was 6. about 1590, relinquished the name of Kirkaldy and resigned the estate of Grange to the heir male of that family. (") Alexander (Hume) Earl of Hume [S.], having acquired in 1606 the patrimony of the Abbey of Jedburgh, erected into " a temporal Lordship," assumed the title of Lord JSDBOBOHB, and appears as " Earl of Hume, Lord Jedburghe" in the deed, July 1611, whereby he exchanges Jedburgh for Ilirsel with Sir John Ker, of Little- dean, for whom in this conveyance there was actually inserted a special clause creating him " Lord Jedburgh." This clause was, however, expunged by order of the King, but Sir John continued so to itvle himself, and " it was not until after being summoned to appear before the Privy Council, 2 Dec. 1613, to answer for this flagrant contumely that he was at length compelled under pain of condign punishment to forego the dignity and descend to his natural rank of a Commoner."
