He, hi nvever, soon afterwards petitioned the Queen for his recognition, ami was accordingly recoguised as EARL UF KENT, and sum. to Pari. 23 March 1572, taking his seat 8 May following, hiving sat on the trial of the Duke of Norfolk in Jan. 1571 2. He m. Susan, da. of Richard Bertie, by Katharine, bow. Duchess op Suffolk, and sun jure Baroness Willolghiiy df. EaiSSBt. He d. at Homsey. Midx., 17 March, and was bur. (with his grandfather) 17 April 1573 at St Giles' Cripplegate. Admon. 17 March 1572/3. His widow m. 30 Sep. 15S1 at Stenig.it, co. Lincoln, Sir John Wingfield, of Withcoll, co. Lincoln, whom she survived, renouncing admon. to his goods, 16 Dec. 1506. XVII. 1573. G. Henry (Grey), Earl of Kent and Lord Grey de RfJTHYX, br. and h., b. 1511 ; admitted (with his elder br.) to Gray's Inn, 22 Feb. 1568/i> ; member of the Queen's household; Knighted before 1578 and tac to the peera/e, March 1573; was a zealous protectant; one of the Couneil( J ) for the trial of the Scotch Queen in Oct. laS-i, and fur her subsequent execu- tion in Feb 1537 ; Lord Lieut. ofiBeds, 15S7, and again 1013. He m. Mary, widow of Edward (Stanley), 3d Earl of Deubv (who rf. 21 Oct. 1572), da. of Sir George Cotto.v, of Combermere, co. Chester, liy -Mary, da. of John Onley, of Catesby, co. Northampton. She d. 3. p. 16 Nov. 1580. He d. 31 Jan. and was bur. 1 Feb. 1614/5, at Flitton, Beds. XVIII. 1615. 7. Charles (Grey), Earl of Kent and Lord Grey DE Ruthyn, br. aud h. 6. about 1515 ; was some time Gent, of the household to Archbishop Parker ; admitted to Gray's Inn, 12 Jan. 1587/8 ; sue. to the peerage, Jan. 1614/5. He in. about 1580 Susan, da. of Sir Richard Cotton, of Bedhampton. Hants. She d. 1617. He d. at his manor house of Bluuhaui 26 and was 6«r. 2S Sep. 1623(1') at Flitton afs.l., having settled the manor, &c, of Burbaeh, co, Leicester, on his cousin Anthony 'irey. Clerk. M.I. in which he is styled " Earl of Kent, Lord Hastings, Weysford aud Rutheu,"( c ) Jtiq. post mortem 23 Sep. 1632. XIX. 1G23. S. Henry (P.rey), Earl of Kent [1(65] and Lord Gki:y DE Ruthyn [1324] only s. and h. ; b. about 15S3 ; Kniyhtcd 21 April 16C3 at Worksop ; styled LORD Giiey DH Ruthyn, from 1615 till he sue. to the Karldom in Sep. 1623. Bearer of the Second Sword at the Coronation of Charles I., 2 Feb, 1626. He m. (before Sep.) 1602, Elizabeth 2d da. and coheir of Gilbert (Talbot), 7th Earl of Shrewsbury, by Mary, da. of Sir William Cavendish, of Chatsworth, co. Derby. He d. s.p. 21 aud was bur. 28 Nov. 1639 at Flitton afsd. Admon. (in which he is described as of Wrest, Beds " Earl of Kent, Lord Ruthin, Hastings and Weysford "(") 21 Nov, 1639. At his death the Barony of Grey de Ruthyn passed to his nephew (Charles Louguevilla) the heir general, but the Earldom of Kent and most of the estates passed to his distant cousin, the heir male, as under. His widow is supposed to have in. (the well-known) John Selden. She d. 7 Dec. 1651 at the Friary House, Whitefriars, and was bur. 7 Jan. following at Flitton, aforesaid. [*) Will, in which she describes herself [not as " widow," but] as " late wife of Henry Earl of Kent," dat. 20 June 1649 (reciting conveyances of lands in July 1647 to herself and the heirs of her body, with rem. to " John Selden of the Inner Temple, London, Esq.") leaves everything to John Selden, who proves the same, 12 Dec. 1651. ( a ) On this occasion, says Dugdale, he shewed much more zeal for her destruction than befitted a person of honour." ( b ) The date on the monument is 1625, but that in the burial register 1623.
