ITesry (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare and Baron of Offaly [I.], called " na Tuar/h " or "of tlie Battleaxes," 2d but 1st siirv. s. and lj. male ; b. 1502, was accused of treason, when but 18, and sent to England ; sue. his lather in 1585 ; was at the hoisting on the Hill of Tara, with S horsemen, 2-1 Sep. 1593, and fought, early in 1597, against the rebellion in Tyrone, whire he was mortally wounded. He ni. before 1590, Frances, da. of Charles (Howard), 1st Earl ok Nottingham, by his first wife Katharine, da. of Henry (Carts), 1st Baron HuksDON. He o. as afsd. s.p.m., at Drogheda, 30 Sep. 1597, ami Was bur. at. Kildare Cathedral, His widow m. (contract 27 May 1601) Henry (BROOKE), 11th LORD Codhaji, who was attainted 'i603, and who d, 21 Jan. 161S/9. She was bur. 11 July 162S, in Westm. Abbey. Will dat. 21 June, pr. 8 July 162S. XIII. 1597. IS. William (Fitz Gerald) Earl of Kildare, &0. [I.],br. and k. male. He d. unm. April 1599, being accidentally drowned while crossing from England to assist the Earl of Essex in quelling the rebellion in Tyrone. XIV. 1599. 14- Gerald (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare, &c, [I.], cousin and h. male, being s. aud k. of the Hon. Edward Fitz Gerald, Lieut, of the Gent. Pensioners, by Mabel, widow of Sir John Paston, da. anil h. of Sir John Leigh, of Helston, Dorset, which Edward (who was living 1569. aged about 50), was yst. s. of the 9th Earl, being br. (of the whole blood) to the 1 1th Earl. He sue. to the Earldom [I.], April 1599, but his claim to the estates, &c, was in 1606 opposed by Dame Lettice Digby(') the heir general. In 1600 he was made Governor of Offaly, and in 1601 Com. for Couuaught. He m. (by dispensation) his cousin Elizabeth, da. of Christopher (Nugent), 6th Baron Delyin [I.], by Mary, da. of Gerald (Fitz Gerald), 11th Eahl of Kit.dare [L], abovenamed. He d. 11 Feb. 1611/2, his obsequies being at Maynooth, but his burial, not till 15 Nov. 1612, at Kildare Cathedral. His widew was outlawed for being concerned in the rebellion of 1611. She d. 1661. XV. 1612. 15. Gerald (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare, &c. [I.], only s. and b., 6. 26 Dec. 1611, being S weeks old at his father's death. He d. 11 Nov. 1620, in his 9th year at Maynooth, and was bur at Kildare Cathedral. XVI. 1G20. 16. George (Fitz Gerald), Earl of Kildare, &c. [l.J called " The. Fairy Earl,"( b ), cousin and h. male, being 3d but only siirv. s. and k. of Thomas Fitz Gerald, of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, by Frances 1st da. of Sir Thomas RANDOLPH, Postmaster of England, -which Thomas was next br. to Gerald, the 14th Earl, aud d. 1619. He was bap. 23 Jan. 1611/2, being in his 9th year(") when ke me. ta the Earldom [I.]. He mat. at Oxford (Ch. Ck.) Oct. 1629"; being ed. iu the Protestant faith, having been first in ward to the Duke of Lennox [S.J and subsequently to the 1st Earl of Cork [I.]. He took his seat 14 July 1634; was one of the Lords who declared, on 22 Oct. 1611, at Dublin Castle their ignorance of the rebellion ; suffered the pillage aud wreck of his castle of Maynooth, 7 Jan. 1642 by the Catholics ; and was in Juue 1647 in command of one of the regiments about Dublin which were disbanded by Cromwell in 1649. He m. 15 Aug. 1630 (at his nge of 18) Joan, da. of Richard (Boyle), 1st Earl of Cork k [I.], by his second wife, Catherine, da. of Sir Geoffrey Fenton. She, who was b. 14 June 1611, d. 11, and was bur. 27 March 1657 (with her father) at St. Patrick's, Dublin. He rf, early iu 16C0 (shortly before the restoration) and was bur. at Kildare.
