In 1797 he was in command of the north of Ireland, during the rebellion, and defeated a French force which there landed in Aug. 1798. From Aug. 1S00 to July lSOo he was Commanded rs Chief in India dining the Mahratta war which, in conjunction with Sir Arthur Wellesley (afterwards Duke of Wellington) he brought to a successful close, after the battles of Delhi.
