His widow, who was bap. 16 Dec. 1630. at Hadham Parva, m. 17 Aug. 1657, Henry (Somerset), 1st Ddkk of Beaufort (who d- 21 Jan. 16«!>/700), and d. 7 Jan. 1714/5, in her 85th year, being far. at Badminton, co. He was b. about 1651 ; styled Loud Beauchamp (after the death of h's father) 1654-60. He sue. (o the peerage, as above, 24 Oct. 1660 ; was a Bencher of Gray's Inn and Recorder of Lichfield, 1667. IX. 1671. 4- John (Seymour), Duke of Somerset, Marquess of Hertford, Ac, uncle aud h. male, being 5th and yst. s.if) of William, the 2d Duke. He was 4. before 162S ; styled Lord John Somerset, ( fc ) " The Marquis of Hertford was a man of great houour, great interest in fortune and estate, aud of au universal esteem over the kingdom ; and though be had received many and continued disobligations from the court . . . carried himself with notable steadiness in the support and defence of the king's power and dignity . . . He was [1642] of an age not fit for much activity aud . . . loved his book above all exercises. [Clarendon's "Hist. Reb."} A fine portrait of him "after Van Dyck" with the collar of the Garter about his neck is engraved in " Doyle." (') The date, 1674, is on the monument, that of 1673 in the bur. reg., according to " Coll. Top et Gen," vol. v, p. 24 and 35. (') Sir E. Nicholas writes to Sir E. Hyde, 14 May 1651, " Certainly the King had a very great loss in the death of Lord Beauchamp, and, by that loss, the West will be much unprovided." ( d ) "A very pretty young man " writes Pepys in his " Diary" for 30 May 1667. (°) Elizabeth, his only surv. sister and heir, m. 31 Aug. 1676, Thomas (Bruce), 2d Earl of Ailesbury, and* was mother of Charles, the 3d and last Karl, who, thro' her, inherited the vast estates of Tottenham and Savernake, co. Wilts, >is also the co- representation as senior coheir (the Scottish "heir of line") thro' the families of Seymour, Grey, and Brandon, of the Lady Mary Tudor, da. of Henry VII. At his death this representation devolved on his da. aud her descendants but the estates on Ins sisters son, Thomas Brudeuell, afterward* Brace, ancestor of the present (1S96) Marquesses of Ailesbury. u Edward Seymour, the 4th s,, his nest elder br., d. an infant, N
