Coll., Cambridge ; M. A., 1857. He was M.P. (") Distinguished chiedy for " his remarkable bon-homta.it and unalterable good temper" . . . "this good-natured, popular, liked-and-laughed-at good Fellow, more of a Grazier than a Statesman," . . . without one showy accomplishment, without wit to amuse or eloquence to persuade, with a voice uumelodious and a manner ungraceful, and barely able to speak plain sense in still plainer language, exercised in the House of Commons an influence and even a dominion greater than any Leader [e.g., " Pitt the father, Pitt the son, Canning or Castlereagh " J either after or before him. His friends followed this plain simple man with enthusiastic devotion and he possessed the faculty of disarming his political antagonists of all bitterness and animosity towards him." . . . He appears, however, tho' a man of good private character and fair abilities, to have been an exceptionally incon- sistent politician and a poor speaker. [Greville's " Memoirs "] A life of " LORD Althobp" (for by that name he was for more than 30 years, 1802-34, well-known in the agricultural and political world) is written by Ernest Myers ; his portrait ' after Sir G. Hayter" is engraved in " Doyle."
