John Stafford- Howard, formerly Howard, of Stafford Castle, by his first wife, Mary, da. of Sir John South- cott, of Merstliam, co. Surrey, which John (who d. in Paris, Nov. 1714) was next br. to the late Karl. He, who was b. about 1690, sic;, to the peerage, 27 April 1719, under the spec. rem. ill the creation of that dignity. He m. about 1718, his cousin, Anne, da. of George Hoi. man, of Warkworth, co. Northampton, by Anastacia, sister of the late Karl, da. of William (Howard), 1st Viscount Stafford abovenatned. She, who was b. 21 Oct. 1095, d. 21 and was bur. 20 May 1725, at Warkworth afsd. M.I. Admon. 2."i Feb. 1731/2. He U. in France, Jan. 1733/4, and was 4ur. in the church of the Augustine nuns at Paris. William Matthias (Stafford-Howard), Earl of Stafford, only s. and h., 6. on St. Matthias day (24 Feb.) probably 1718/9; sti/lcd Lord Howard till he sue. to the peerage, as above, Jan. 1733/4 ; F.K.S., 16 June 1743. He m. 8 or 9.6 July 1743 (lie. fee.) Henrietta,^) da. and h. of Richard (or Philip) CaSTUXON, of Paris, Banker. He d, s.p.s. (legit.) in Jeruiyn street, 28 Feb. 1750/1, aged about 32, and was bur. at Arnndel.( c ) Will dat. 26 Feb. ] 750, pr. 7 March 1751, and 5 Oct. 1759. His widow m. 11 Oct. 17:>0, at St. .Mary Mag , Old Fish street, as his first wife, Robert (Maxwell), 2nd Baron, and afterwards (1700) 1st Viscount Farnham [I.j, who, after her death, was cr. Kaiu. of FaUniiam [I.], and who d. s.p.m.s. 16 Nov. 1779. She d. 30 Aug. 17o'l, and was bur. at St. ( — ), uear St. Paul's, London. Adiuon. 9 Oec. 1761. XIII. 1751, J4. .Ioiin Paul (Stafford-Howard), Earl of Staf- to ford [16881 wuo but for the attainder of his grandfather in 1702. 1678, would have been also Viscount Stafford [1640], and Baron Stajford [1640], uuele and 1. male, being next br. (of the whole blood) to the 2d Karl. He was b. 26 June 1700 ; sue. to the peerage, 28 Feb. 1750/1. He in. 1738 Elizabeth Mary Michael, da. of Abraham Ewjjss, of co. Somerset, by his first wife, Elizabeth, da. of John St. Aubtn, of Alfoxton, in tlnit county. He d. s.p., 1, and was 6ur. 7 April 1762, in Westm. Abbey, aged 61. Will dnt. 27 Dec. 1757, to 25 Jan. 1761, pr. 27 May 1762. By his death the Earldom of Stafford became extinct, as did also the right to the (attainted) Vis- countcy of Staford but the right to the Barony of Stafford devolved (subject to the attainder of 1673) on the heirs general of the body of the grantee.( d ) His (") See Col. Abbey ltegisters," (p. 295, note 3) for the amusing and most abusive way in which her husband speaks of her in his will, wherein he leaves her 15 brass halfpence " which will by her a pullett to her supper." Lord Hervey, how- ever (" Memoirs," II., p. 116), calls her " An old French Lady, who had a3 much wit, humour ami entertainment in her as any mau or woman I ever knew, with a great justness in her ways of thinking and very little reserve in her manner of giving her opinions of things aud people." ('") As to this match Horace Walpole remarks {Letters, 1743), "she is as ugly as he." ( c ) Among his sisters after the death in 1762 of their uuele (the last heir male of the bodies of the grantees of 1640) was the right to the Barony of Stafford under the spec. rem. in its creation of 1640 subject, of course, to the attainder of Viscount Stafford in 1678. Thess were (1) Mary Apolonia Scholastica, 17 Keb. 1721, m. Guy Augustus, Count de Rohan Chubot, in France. She d. apparently s.p. and before 1807 inasmuch as (2) Anastacia, b. 21 Oct. 1722, a nun of the third Order of St. Francis, at Paris, appears to have been the surviving sister and, as such, to have assumed, notwithstanding the attainder of 167S, the title of ' oViroiicss Stafford." She d. num. at Paris, 27 April 1807, aged 84 (3) Anne, jst da., 6. 15 May 1725, a nun like her sister, d. before 1S07. ( ) These in the first instance were the daughters of his eldest br., the 2d Earl (see note " c above) who all d. s.p. before 1807, but, in the second, were the desceudaats of his ouly sister, Mary (wife of Francis Plowdeu), to one of whom hw her representative) the Barouy was ullowed (as iu the text below) iu 1S24.
