Edinburgh, one of the Barons of the Court of Exchequer [S.J, by Eupheme, da. of Sir Andrew Myrton, Dart. [S.], of Gogar, which George (who d. 29 July 1715), was 5th and yst s. of John, the 1st Earl and 2d Viscouut. He was admitted as an Advocate, 1741, but afterwards became a Capt. in the army. He sue. to the family estates() on the death of his uncle, the 2d Karl in 1717. but not to the Earldom of Stair, &c, as had been by that Earl intended, tho' he for a short time assumed such title. ( e ) He, however, sue. to that peerage (thirteen years later), 27 July 1762 ; Hep. Peer [S.], 1771-71, taking an active part against any measures inimical to America, receiving the thanks of the Province of Massachussetts in 1 774.(0 He »i. Margaret, da. of Geo. John- (Dalrymple), Earl op Stair, &c. [S.] only s. and h.; b. at Edinburgh 24 Sep. 1749; styled Viscount Dalhymple, 1762-89; Capt. 87th Foot, 1779, serving in the American war, and in the attack on New London and Fort Griswold, 17S1. Envoy to Poland, 1782 avid to Berlin, 1735. First Commissr. to confer the Garter on the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, who was invested therewith at Cassel, 7 Aug. 1786(8) ; sue. to the peerage, as above 13 Oct. 178P. Rep. Peer [S.] el. 1790, 1796, 1802 and 1806. He rf. unui. at his house in Spring gardens 1 June 1821 aged 71, and was bur. at Inch, co. Wigton. Will pr. 1821. {*■) Had there been any younger brother living, he would, under the novodamus of 170C/7, have sue. to the Earldom, but tho' he had no less than five brothers, viz., John (as on p. 224, note " d "), James (the 3d Earl as in the text), Charles, Hugh, and George, they had all d. unm. before him. (*») He was heir thereto under the final rem. in the novodamus as heir male of the body of the 1st Viscount, which rem. restored both the Earldom and Vis- countcy to the original remainders granted to them at their creation. ( c ) Hiddell (p. 388) after stating that the Stair titles by the charter of 1707 must always separate from the Earldom of Dumfries when such Earl has a younger brother, adds that if (as is possible) they should again become united, such separation "which has been acted upon, would also recur." ( d ) He sold the " noble property of Newliston," which had been brought to the Dalrymple family by that of Dundas, thro' the marriage of the 1st Earl. («) He voted at the election of Scotch Hep. Peers, 13 Aug. 1747, as well as his cousin, James, whose right to the peerage was next year established. 0 He was the author of several political pamphlets all of a gloomy character.
