Having m. (lie. Loud. 10 July 1020 to marry at St. Benuet Sherehug, he about 21 and she about 17) Anne, 3d and yst da. of William (Cecil), 2d Kahl of Exeter, by his second wife Elizabeth, da. of Sir William Drury, be acquired with her the castle, borough and manor of Stamford, and was consequently cr. 20 Mareh 1628, EARL OF STAMFOKD, co. Lincoln. This act of favour, however, did not hinder him from taking an active part against the King,(») by whose forces, however, he was defeated at Stratton, 10 May 1043( b ) whence he lied to Exeter, where he was surrendered, with that city, 5 Sep. 1643. He had been shortly before appointed (on the num. of Pari.) L. Lieut, of Leicestershire, 1042 ; Com. -in- Chief of the counties of Hereford, Gloucester, Salop and Worcester, 1642-45, &c. He was a commissr. to the Scots, 29 Jon. 1018, was also (tho' a Peer) M.P. for Leicestershire, 1651. In Booth's rising, Aug. 1059, he declared for the King and was consequently imprisoned 1659-60, when he was received into lavour by Charles II.
