Leydeu ; was travelling tutor to the 7th Earl of Argyll, who I. lo.SO. introduced him to Court [S.l ; was in 10Ij3 one of the 32 Gent. (extra) of the chamber of Prince Henry, and, on the death of that Prince in 1612, obtained the same office to Prince Charles, having been knighted between 1608 and (25 May) 1609. His poetical and other talents brought him into great favour with James I., who iu 1614 made him Master of Requests, and, sub- sequently, by charter, 10 Sep. 1621, gave him (for the purpose of colonization) the (stupendous) grant of the whole of the territory of Nova Scotia, with permission to divide the same into 100 tracts and dispose of each, together ivith the rank of Baronet,' to as many purchasers. No steps were, however, taken iu this matter till the accession of Charles I. who by a charter of •' novodamus," 12 July 1625, continued the same (extending the number 100 to 150) and he was enfeoffed in the Barony of Nova Scotia, 29 Sep. (recorded, 1 Oct) 1625, all being ratified by Act. of Pari [S.J, 1633, cap. 38. By pat., 12 July, sealed, 9 Sep. 1625, he was cr. [Qi/. by himself iu virtue of his right to make such creations] a Baronet [S.] with rem. to his heirs male whomsoever.^) Ou 2 Feb. 1628, he had charters of the Lordship of Canada, iu (°) See vol. i, p. 259, note " c," sub " Basset de Sapcote." ( b ) His parents were married about 1566 or 1567, and he was the first child. He, also must, presumably, have been somewhat older than his pupil, the Earl of Argyll, who was b. before 1571. The date " let. sua; 57 " to his [uudated] portrait which appears in his " Recreations," pub. 1637, has led to the supposal that he was not born till 1580. [See " Nat Bioyr."] (°) Sir Robert Gordon was cr. " Premier Baronet" [S.] by patent, 28 May 1625 and, in the lists of Nova Scotia Baronets, Sir William Alexander is placed the 13th. He, however, and the heirs male of his body, as Lieutenants of Nova Scotia, had pre- cedence "before all the afBd. Knights Baronets."
