Strange from 1572 to 1593, being fur some time during that period sum. to Pari. v.p,(») (in his father's Barony of Strange He Knokin) as LORD STRANGE, by writs from 2S Jan. (15SS/9) SI Kliz. to 19 Feb. (1592/3) 35 KHz. He sue. as EARL OF DERBY, &c., on the death of his father, 25 Sep. 1593, but rf. s.p.m. a few months later, lti April ISM, when the Earldom of Jkrliy devolved on his br. and h. male (see that dignity), but the Baronies of Strange de Knokin [1299], Mohun de Dunstcr , [1-9?], and Stanley [145d],/r/( into abeyance between his daughters and coheirs.^'). [The Barony of Strange (Strange de Knokin) was, however, anomalously assumed by the succeeding Earls of Derby, and being, erroneously, supposed, iu 1628, to belong to them, gave occasion to a writ of that date whereby a new Barony of the name of "Strange" was created. Kent, s, and h. of Sir John Smythe,(' : ) of the same (who rf. 29 Nov. 1608, aged 52), by Etizabeth, da. and h. of John Finei n, of Hawe iu Berne, cn. Kent, was b. 1599, and " being a person of distingui«hed merit and opulent fortune,"(°) was made K.B. at the coronation of Charles I, 2 Feb. 1625/0, and was er. 17 July 102S, VISCOUNT STRANGFORD, co. Dowse [1-1 He m. about 1022, Barbara, da. of Robert (Sydney), 1st Earl ok Leicester, by his first wife, Barbara, da. and h. of John Gamage. He d. at Ilungerford House, Strand, co. Midx., 30 June, and was bur. 15 July 1035, at Ashford afsd., aged 36. Will pr. 4 July 1635. His widow m. Sir Thomas CoUUPKPBB, of Ardingley, Sussex.
