Essex ; was 4. about 1484 ; ed. at the Court, becoming thus a great favourite with Henry VIII, to whom he was Escpure of the body, 1509—1512; Chamberlain of North Wales, 1501) ; Marsh d of the King's bench, 1510 ; Joint Marshal of the Household, 1511, being knighted 20 March 1512; Master of the Horse, 1513; el. K.G. 23 April and iust. 7 May 151;!. In Dec. 1513 ho received the wardship of Elizabeth, MM jure BaJIONBBS Lisi.k [da. and h of John (Ghkv), Viscount LlSLl] with whom he made a contract of marriage, being accordingly cr. 15 May 1513 VISCOUNT LISLE, with rem. " to the heirs male of the body of Elizabeth Grey, Viscountesa(6) Lisle, by the said Charles begotten." In 1513, as Viscount Lisle, he was Marshal of the King's army in France, taking an active part against Thcroueiine, and in the siege of Touruay. He was cr. 1 Feb. 1513/4, Duke of SuffM, as above- stated. Iu Jau. 1514/5, he was sent as Ambassador to the young King of France, Francis I., where (3 March 1511/5) he m. privately, and without the Koyal Consent (as his 3d wife), Mary, the Queen Dowager of France, sister to Henry VIII., as is more fully stated below. After this he remained for some years iu retirement. He was, however, present iu 1520, at the meeting known as The Field of the Cloth of Quid" He entertained Hen. VIII. and the Kmperor Charles V. at his house at Southward, in 1522. On 20 April (11 Hen. VIII.) 1523, his marriage with the sun jure Harmless Lisle, having never taken place, he sirrcmlcrcd the patent of the Visenunlry of Lisl(,(' 1 ) the lady marrying, subsequently, elsewhere. Suffolk (will pr. 13 July and 17 Nov. 1491), by Elizabeth (will dat. 1496, pr. 8 May 1497), da. of Sir Robert Winglield, of Lather- inghaui.
