( a ) Stafl'ord House, formerly York House (the building thereof being begun by H.R.II. the Duke of York), was purchased in 1S27, by the 1st Duke of Sutherland for £72.000 (not £80,000 as stated in Lord Colchester's " Diary ") and giveu by him, with £30,000, to complete it, to his eldest son, afterwards the 2d Duke. (*) She was many years a leader in London society, besides being the promoter of various philanthropic schemes. She was, also, the solitary companion of the Queen, during the first weeks of widowhood, who has given a sympathetic description of her character.
