John Philip Taaffe, a Councillor of the Empire, by Maria Brigitta, da. of Rodolph, Count Chotek a Chot Kowa, which John I'hilip, was 1st s. and h. ap. of the late Lord, but rf. v. p. 10 Dei'. 1765, aged 32, He was 6. in London, 6 Oct. 1762 : sue. to the peerage [L], 30 Dec 1769 : was Lieut. Col. of the Hadek Hussars in the Imperial Service, and was Chamberlain at that Court. Hew. 11 April 1787, at Bruno in Moravia, Josephs, da of Charles William, Count HaUO- witz. She ({. 1828. Francis John Charles Joseph Rodolph (Taaffe), Viscount Taaffe of Corhfn. &c. [I.], also a Count of the Holt Roman Empire, 1st s. and h. : b at IJrnnii nfsd. 23, and bap. 21 May 1738, in the garrison church of St. Maria Ascension there ; was a major in the Austrian service ; Chamberlain and Master of the Horse to the Court at Vienna ; sue. la the peerage [I.J 7 June 1830. Hew. 11 April 1811. Antonia Atnedee, Countess DB Varkony, a Lady of the order of the Starry Cross. He rf. s.p. at Baden, near Vienna, 8 and was bur. 11 Feb. 1819, in St. Helen's cemetery there, need 60. His widow, b. 1705, was, apparently, living in 1S80, tho' not subsefjuently.C 1 ) (•] No less than 14 such sons are named in '• Lodge" of whom but live are credited with issue, viz. the 1st and the 8th (as in the text), and the 9tb, Thomas, who m. in Flanders and had three sons, (from two of whom issue male may still remain), viz. (1) Lucas. (2) Theobald, who rf unm. (3) Charles. The male issue »f the 3d and 4th sons (the only others who had issue), was presumablv extinct before 1738. ( b ) Tho' politically attached to the Hanoverian interest, he was active in procuring a mitigation of the penal laws against the Roman Catholics. (°) A valuable pamphlet on the condition of Ireland, quoted by Lecky, was pub- lished in 1766 by Lord Taaffe, a Roman Catholic nobleman.
