Col. 3d Foot Guards, 1743, becoming finally, 1747, Major General ; served as a volunteer iu the Imperial army in Sicily. 1719-20. being severely wounded at the battle of Franca Villa; sue. to the peerage. 23 Jan. 1710/7; Col. 48th Foot. 1749. He m. 21 Aug. 1730, Elisabeth, da. nf Lyonel Daniel, s. of Sir Peter Daniel, of Clapham. co. Surrey. He d. 17 April 1750. aged 48, and was bur. at Southill. Will pr. April 1750. His widow d. 17 March 1759 Will pr. 1759. IV. 1750. 4. George (Hyxg), Viscount Torrixgtox, &c, 1st s. and h ; b. about 1740 ; ed. at Westminster ami Cambridge ; sue. to the peerage 17 April 1750 ; was Minister at Brussels, 17S2-92. He m. 20 July 1705. at St. Margaret's. Westin., Lucy, da. of John ( lioYLK), 5th Eahl ok Cork [I ], by his second wife, Margaret, da. and b. of John Hamilton. She, who was b. 27 May 1744, d. IS March 1 792, at Tollbridge Wells. He el. s.p.m.s.( b ) 14 Dec. 1S12, at Ham Common, co. Surrey, aged 72. Will pr. 181 S. V. 1812. 5. John (Btkg), Viscount Torrixgtox, &c, next br. and h. ; b. 11 Oct. 1742 ; was an officer in the army, 1760-80, being Lieut. -Col. 1st Reg. of Foot Guards, 1776-80; a Commissr. of Stamps, 17S2 ; sue to the peerage 14 Dec. 1812. He m. 3 March 1707, Bridget, da. of Arthur Fuhkkst, Commodore H.N'., Com. -in-Chief on the Jamaica station. He d. 1 Jan. 1813, in Tenterden street, St. Geo., Han. sq., aged 70. Will pr. 1818. He vi. secondly, 5 Oct. 1811, Frances Harriet, 2d da. of Rear- Admiral Sir Robert K.uilow, G.C.B., by Elizabeth, da. of William GahHETT, of Wortiug, Hants. He d. 18 June 1831, aged 02, at his seat, Votes Court, co. Kent. Will pr. Aug. 1831. His widow ef. 7 Feb. 186S, in her S2d year, at Shipbourne Lodge, near Tunbridge, co. Kent. (») Of the eleven sons of the 1st Viscount, but 5 survived him, of whom, the two elder sue. successive ly to the Viscountcy ; the third, Hubert, being grandfather of the 1st Earl of Strafford, and the fourth, John, being the well known Admiral Byng, shot by order of court-martial 14 March 1757, for his conduct wheu iu command against the French fleet oil Minorca, An admirable and most impartial account of him is given by Professor J. K. Laughtou, iu the " iVat. Biogr.," who shows clearly that tho' acquitted of "cowardice" or " disaffection," it was not (as popularly held) for "an error of judgment" that he was condemned, but for "negligence; i.e., " negligence so gross as to be iu the highest degree criminal. ' ( b ) He, besides four daughters, his coheirs (all of whom were married), had three sous, all of wdiom d. unm. and v. p., viz. (1) William Henry, b. 20 May 1709 ; d. 23 Nov. 1770. (2) William Henry (the 2d so named), b. 7 May 1775 ; (/.Oct. 1792. (3) George, d. of dysentery as a mid'shipmau of H.M.S. AauiloB, at Gibraltar in his 10th year.
