37B COMPLETE PEERAGE balcarres months. He again joined, in 1690, in Sir James Montgomery's scheme for restoring the exiled King, whom (on its discovery) he joined at St. Germain. After an exile of ten years, he returned to Scotland in 1700, and was received at court by Queen Anne. He voted in favour of the Scottish Union. He obtained likewise a pension of ^^foo a year for ten years in lieu of the one of ;/!^iooo lost at the Revolution. P.C. (again) Apr. 1705. His attachment to the House of Stuart led him to join the Rising of 1 71 5, but having surrendered himself, he was included in the indemnity. He m., 3rdly, Jean, da. of William (Kerr, formerly Drummond), 2nd Earl of Roxburghe [S.], by Jean, da. of Harry Kerr, ' Master of Roxburghe,' styled 'Lokd Kerr. He m., 4thly, before 4 July 1689, Margaret, da. of James (Campbell), 2nd Earl of Loudoun [S.], by Margaret, da. of Hugh (Montgomerie), 7th Earl of Eglintoun [S.]. He d. in 1722, at Balcarres, in his 73rd year, and was bur. in the chapel there. (°) His widow d. May 1747. He served in the wars in ' ' Flanders in 1 707, and was wounded at the siege of St. Venant, but owing to his father's share in the Rising of 171 5, it was not till 1732 that he obtained a company in the Foot Guards. He was a Rep. Peer [S.] 1734 till his death. (") He m.y'm 17 18 (cont. 31 July 17 18), Elizabeth, da. of David Scott, of Scotstarvet, co. Fife. He d. s.p., 25 July 1736. Admon. as of Balcarres, CO. Fife, 3 Aug. 1737. His widow d. at Edinburgh, 14 Sep. 1778. (") He was a man of letters, with a taste for art as well as books. He was author of An account of the affairs in Scotland relating to the Revolution, 1688, and as such has a place among Walpole's Noble Authors. (") His grand-daughter characterises him as " one of the handsomest and most accomplished men of his time, a man of letters, but fond of pleasure, and pleasure's favourite. " V.G.
