natives spoke. He used to sit in the verandah,^[1] between his bearer's knees, and chew paun,^[2] and eat bazar^[3] sweetmeats. He wore no shoes or stockings; but was dressed in pangammahs^[4] and had silver bangles^[5] on his ancles. No one could have told by his behaviour or manner of speaking that he was not a native, but his pretty light hair and blue eyes at once shewed his parentage.
