PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.
Húgli District. The facilities afforded by this unique storehouse of local literature, alike in the English and the Vernacular tongues, have materially aided in the verification of statements, the avoidance of errors, and the addition of new facts. They have tended to lessen the inevitable disadvantages under which literary work has to be done in India, separated by half the globe from those great libraries of reference, which more fortunate writers in England have at their disposal.
