In Lucknow city in 1883, the deaths from fever numbered 5ta7, and from small- pox 21 :4, the total mortality being at the rate of 34-66 per thousand. Total registered deaths in District and city in 1883, 28,630. The prin- cipal medical institutions are the King’s hospital, civil dispensary, and Balrampur hospital in the city of Lucknow, at which 40,480 patiems received medical relief in 1883. A lunatic asylum for the whole of Oudh is situated upon the eastern bank of the Gtirnti, near the Faide road. LuCkDOW.—TMSU or Subdivision of Lucknow District. Oudh, lying between 26' 38' 3e" and 27' o’ 15" 3'. lat, and between 80° 42' and 8t' 8’ 30” It. long. Bounded on the north by Malihtiba'd tonsil; on the east by Bari Banki District; on the south by Mohanlalgan] (aloft; and on the west by Mohair (all!!! of Unao. This tahril comprises the 3 pargumi: of Lucxnow, Buxwk, and KAKORI. Population (1869) 468,507; (r881) 414,570, namely, males 219,327, and females 195,243. The decrease of 53,937, or rr'5 per cent., between the twelve years 1869-1881 is, as explained in the article on Lucknow District, mainly attributable to the famine of 1877-73. and the fever epidemic of the following year. Classified according to religion, the population in 1881 consisted of—llindus, 29!,t79; Muhammadans, “6,541; Jains, 338; ‘others,’ 6512.
