Lajput Rai.

Lajput Rai, Lala, Lahore; s. of Lala Radha Kishen, formerly Urdu Teacher in a Government School; b. Jagraon in the district of Ludhiana, Punjab, 1865; is a Vaisya of the Agarvala sect; educ: Government College, Lahore; holder of a University scholarship; passed the First Examination in Law, 18S3; Licentiate in Law, 1885; commenced practice in the Court of Hissar; identified himself completely with the Arya Samaj; took an active part in the foundation of the Dayanand Anglo Vedic College; proceeded to America, 1905; organised a Hindu Orphan Relief Movement; keenly interested in the political welfare of his countrymen; took a leading part in the political discussions of the time; deported for his political views, 1907; released about the beginning of 1908. Publications: Life of Mazaine, Garibaldi (Urdu), Sri Krishna; also ‘the story of my deportation’. Address: Lahore, Punjab, India.

Laidlaw, Sir Robert Kt., (1909), F.R.G.S., Partner, Messrs. Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co.; s. of late William Laidlaw; b. Bonchester, Ronburgshire, 1856; educ: Parish Schools of Kirkton and Denholm; m. Mary Eliza, widow of W. L. Francis; British Commissioner to International Opium Commission, Shanghai, 1909; Chairman, Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co., Ltd., M.P. (L) for the Eastern division of Renfrewshire, 1906-10; made a gift of Rs. 75,000 to the authorities of the Y.M.C.A., Calcutta, to be utilised for the construction of the buildings of the association one at Wellington and the other at the Bow Bazaar Street, Calcutta, 1913; made a gift of £50,000 towards a scheme of European education in India, 1913; also made liberal gifts to many a religious and educational institution at Calcutta. Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, Sardar; b. 1864; educ: St. Mary’s College, and Elphinstone College, Bombay; President of the Committee of Management of the Shetrunja temples in Kathiawar; General Secretary of the Jain Conference for many years; Director of many Railway, Navigation, Spinning and Weaving Companies; has built a Dharmasala at Ahmedabad and a girls’ school; floated the Saraspur Manufacturing Company, 1897, the Raipur Manufacturing Company, 1905; Member, Ahmedabad District Board; State Guest at Delhi Durbar, 1911. Address: Ahmedabad, Bombay Presidency, India.

Lalji Walji Sait Sahib, Khan Bahadur, (1898), Merchant, Madras; b. 1858; General Merchant; Commission Agent, and Miner; exports Indian carpets, Mica and Madras embroidery; imports English and continental sundries; owns considerable landed property in and around Madras; partner of a well known and leading firm of merchants, Madras; is closely connected with public movements, particularly those relating to the welfare of the Moslem
