only experience a doubtful profit. The reader, therefore, is affectionately solicited to consider the following pages with candour, justice, and judgment. Should he not accept their teachings, he will at least see that those who do so are not without strong reasons for the hope that is in them. The lovers of truth seek for it in light, and embrace it in liberty. In their inquiries they will humbly look up for guidance to Him who is "the truth;" they will faithfully obey His command to "search the Scriptures;" they will not forget that the way to know His doctrines is to do His will; and in all their efforts to receive and declare them, they will wait patiently for the issues of His providence.
