PLATE XII

Florida Indians offering a stag to the Sun. The drawing is from Picart (Ceremonies and religious Customs of the various Nations of the known World, London, 1733-39, iii, Plate LXXIV [lower]), and represents a seventeenth century European conception of an American Indian rite. The pole is a symbol in the sun-worship of many Plains and Southern Indians.
