PLATE XVI

Garuḍa

The mythic bird Garuḍa is the vāhana ("vehicle") of Viṣṇu. He is the lord of birds, the brother of Aruṇa, the charioteer of Sūrya ("the Sun"), and the implacable foe of snakes, who are his half-brothers. From an ebony carving in the collection of Lieut.-Col. A. H. Milne, of Cults, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
