popularity of this poem. These heroes have not only been made famous in poetry; they have also been painted by famous artists. The "Nine Songs" painted by Li Kung-lin of the Sung dynasty is in the Government Museum at Peking, and is one of "The Four Beautiful Objects" (ssŭ mei chü) of the Emperor Ch'ien Lung. The illustrations of these heroes are taken from Li's painting. The following is a short description of each of the nine heroes:

(1) Tung Huang T'ai I was worshipped in the eastern part of Ch'u as the Eastern Emperor.

(2) Yün Chung Chün is the god of the clouds.

(3) Hsiang Chün is the god of the waterways of Hsiang (modern Hunan).

(a) Hsiang Fu-jên, the two daughters of Emperor Yao, the older being named Wo Huang and the younger Nü Ying.
