54 The Newspaper World, a space of time which would astonish the uninitiated. But if the journalist cannot hope that his voluminous writings will, any of them, possess an enduring interest, what inspires him in his labors ? It is that he is exercising the great prerogative of freedom of speech ; that in many instances he speaks to the world long before statesmen or divines on the questions of the hour; and that he is, by his daily efforts, helping to form the public opinion of the nation.
