Sufian 264 Sultan Sufian Souri, (Sjy^ ty*^*^, whose proper name was Abu 'Abdullah, was horn at Kufa in 713' A. D., 95 A. H._ He was a master of the highest authority in the Traditions and other Sciences. He died in the time of the Khalifa Al-Mahdi, about the year 777 A. D., 160 A. H., and is buried at Basra, where he had concealed himself m order to avoid accepting the office of Kazl.^ Suhyli Khurasani, t^^^-t^^^ ^^^^^ whose full name is Amir Shaikh Ahmad Suhyli, also called Nizam-uddin Ahmad Shvkham, was seal-hearer to Sultan Husam Mirza of Hirat. The work called " Anwar Suhyli, was dedi- cated to him by Husain Waez. He is the author of a Diwan. His death took place in 1501 A. D., 907 A. H. Sukman bin-Ortak, ^i)' ^ cj'-^-, first king of the princes of the Turkman Ortakites who reigned at Amid and Khaifa. The following is a list of this race :— A. D. A. H. Sidtan 'Ali Khurasani, ^Jl«Lr ^Ip ^ylJal.^^ author of the Persian work on Medicine called " Dastur-ul-Ilaj," which he wrote in 1334 A. D., 734 A. H., and dedicated to Sultan Abii Said Bahadur Khan. Sultan 'Ali Mashhadi, cS'^t*'" cj^-*, a native of Mashhad. He was not so much distinguished as a poet as he was as a caligrapher. He was in caligraphy, a pupil of Maulana Azhar, who was a pupil of Jafar, and Jafar was a pupil of Maulana Mir 'AH the inventor of the jSfaskhtah'k. Maulana Sultan 'Ali lived at the court of Mii'za Baiijara and found a patron in Amir 'Ali'sheir. He was upwards of 63 j'ears of age in 1550 A. D., 957 A. H. Sultana Begam, iJ^tU^ ^ daughter of the emperor Babar Shah. Sultana Eegam, <xjtl:i«, a daughter of Mirza Handal the brother of the emperor Humayun. She was married to Shah Kuli Mahram. Her sister named Euqia Sultana was married to the emperor Akbar. SuJtana Razia, ^J^^, daughter of Shams-uddfn Altimsh king of Dehli. She was raised to the throne after the deposition of her brother Eukn-uddm Firoz in November, 1236 A. D. She was deposed in November, 1239 A. D., and confined in the fort of Bitahnda, from which place she made her escape and contrived to raise an army v^ith which she marched towards Dehlf ; hut was defeated and put to death by her brother Bahram Shah, who ascended the throne. The reign of Sultana Eazia lasted 3 lunar years 6 months and 6 days. Her tomb is still to be seen in old Dehli. Sultana Rukia or Kuqia, the daughter of Mirza Handal the son of the emperor Babar, was the first or chief wife of the emperor Akbar, by whom he had no children. Consequently when Shah Jahan was born to Jahangfr, his grandfather Akbar made him over to her to be brought up by her. She was also the patroness of Nur Jahan ; and died at Agrah in January, 1626 A. D., Jumada I, 1035 A. H., aged 84 lunar years. Sultan Ahmad bin-Masa'ud, ^JidM:, author of the Arabic work called " Asmai-ul-Eijal." Sultan Ahmad Mirza, 'j^-* "^^t lyt^-*. Ahmad Mirza (Sultan). Sultan Husain Mirza, t^i"^ cj^^^-*, surnamed Abu'l Ghazi Bahadur, was the son of Mirza Mansur, the son of Mirza Baikara, the son of Mirza 'Umar Shaikh, the son of Amir Taimur. After the death of Sultan. Abu Said Mirza, he contrived to make himself master of Khurasan, and ascended the throne at Hirat on the 24th of March, 1469 A. D., 10th Eamazan, 873 A. H. The great victories which this prince gained over the numer- ous competitors for the throne, as well as over the TJzhaks, obtained him the title of Ghazi, or victorious. The court of this prince boasted of many eminent men. The cele- brated historian Khandami'r was his subject, and Amir 'Alisher his wazir. He reigned in Khurasan 38 lunar years and 4 months, and died according to the " Tabkat Akbari," on the 10th of May, 1506 A. D., corresponding with the 16th Zil-hijja, 911 A. H. aged 70 years, and was buried at Hirat. He was succeeded by his two sons Badiu'zzam&n Mirza and Muzaffar Husain Mirza, who reigned conjointly for some time over Khurasan. The former in the year 1507 A. D., 913 A. H , was driven from his dominions by Shahi Beg Khan Uzbak ; and his brother, who usurped the throne and reigned a short time at Hirat, afterwards shared the same fate. Sultan Husain Mirza is the author of the work called " Majaiis- ul-Ishk," a very entertaining novel, containing a variety of stories, principally on the subject of love. He had a turn for poetry, and composed a Diwan in Turki. His poetical name was Husainf. Sultan Husain Safwi, tjri'^ ^D^^-«, vide Shah Husain Safwi. Sultan Ibrahim, /♦i^ljrft w^^^-, vide Tbr£hfm (Sultan). Sultan Khusro, jj"'^ d vide Khusro (Sultan). Sultan Mahmud, ^J-*^ ij-^i^, vide Mahmud (Sultan) of Ghazni. Sultan Mahmud Mirza, <^j*^ cj^**, the son of Sultan Abu Said Mirza who was sovereign of the greater part of Mawar-un-nahr and Badakhshan. His takhallus or poetical name was " Zilli." Sultan Mirza, !3^'° o^-^-'j vide Muhammad Sultan Mirza. Sultan Muhammad Saljuki, ct^'iJt J^=^ the son of Sultan Jalal-uddin Malikshiih. He succeeded his brother Barkayarak in December, 1104 A. D., 498 A. H., and after a reign of about 13 years died in 1118 A. D., 511 A. H., vide Muhammad (Sultan). Sultan Muhammad, ^'^'■^ IJ^'» liff "^-^ cj^^, the son of Mirza Baisanghar the son of Mirza Shahrukh, the son of Amir Taimur. He was defeated in a battle against his brother Babar Sultan, taken prisoner and put to death in January, 1452 A. D., Zil-hijja, 855 A. H.
