A connection of Akbar and Jahangir, and Mansabdar of 4,500, afterwards promoted to 5000 : an accomplished soldier and literary man, died of drink in 1010 A. H. Zakaria, 'irOj Baha-uddin Zikaria. Zakaria bin-Muhammad. tin-Mahmud-al-Ka- muli-al-Kazwini, t5^:!jL>^'l i^^j*^^^ tL>^ ^j^j} a native of Kazwfn, and author of the " 'Ajaeb-ul-Makhlukat," or the Wonders of the Creation, which he completed in the year 1363 A. D., 764 A. H. There are several copies of this work to be found in the public Libraries of London, and in private collections, some of them containing- beautiful and correct drawings of all the beasts, fishes, birds, trees, and even monsters, described in the book : and the account of metals and gems, a subject that has attracted great public attention of late, contains in particular much curious information. Zakaria bin-Muhammad Ansari of Egypt, <_S>'^*' iSJ^^^ <>*^'°i:j^. k_/j, an author who died 1520 A. D. Zakaria Khan, ^-J^ji thes on of Abdus Samad Khan, styled Saif-uddaula Bahadur Jang. He held the govern- ment of Labor at the period of Nadir Shah's invasion to India 1739 A. D., 1151 A. H., and died in the year 1745 A. D., 12th Jumada II. 1158 A. H. His eldest son succeeded him in the government with the title of Shah nawaz Khan. Zaki, (_5-'t'^'*'* (^^li, a poet of Hamdan, who lived in the time of Shah Tahmasp Safwf, and died about the year 1621 A. D., 1030 A. H. He is the author of a Diwan. Zaki, LS^ poetical name of Jafar 'AU Khan of Dehli who lived in the time of the emperor Shah 'Alam. Zaki or Safi-uddin Zaki Maraghai, cs^"^, was simply called Zaki. He was a poet and died in 1210 A. D., 607 A. H. Zaki Khan, i^ '^, who usurped the throne of Persia after the death of Karim Khan in March, 1779 A. D., but was assassinated after two months. Fide Karfm Khan. Zakhmi, Hazrat, 4^5^^ O;-^, author of a Persian Diwan. Zakhmi, t^=^3, takhallus of Fakhr-uddaula Dabfr-nl-MuIk Eaja Eatan Singh Bahadur. He was a native of Lakhnau where he was minister of Finance. He died in 1850 A. D., 1266 A. H. and left a considerable Library at Bareli. A few years before his death, viz., in 1846 A.D.he had embraced the Muhammadan faith. Zal, J'Jj also called Zalzar, the son of Sam and grandson of Nariman. He was the father of Eustam, and these three personages, viz., Siim, Zal and Eustam pass for the most famous heroes of Persia ; they belong to the reigns of Manuchehr, Bahman and Afrasiab. It was Zal who drove Afrasiab king of the Turks out of Persia and put the crown on the head of Zii or Zab, son of Tahmasp, a descendant of one of the kings of the Pishdadian dynasty. This same Zal was put in prison by Bahman son of Isfan- diar; but he made his escape, and married Eudaba, daughter of Mehrab governor of Kabulistan, who became the mother of Eustam ; unfortunately, however, he fell into the hands of Bahman again, who put him to death. Zalali Hirwi, tSli^* a Poet who was a native of Hirat and died in the year 1525 A. D., 931 A. H. Zalali Khwansari, Mulla, tf"*^ U^l^^ cs-'^j^, who is sometimes called Hakim Zalali, was a native of Khwansar. He was a pupil of Mirza Jalal Asir, and is the author of the following seven Masnawis or poems, viz., " Sulaiman-nama," " Shiala Didar," "Maikhana," Husn Gulutoz," " Azur wa Samundar," "Zarrawa Khursheid" and " Mahmud Ayaz," which was his last composition and which he commenced in 1592 A. D., 1001 A. H., and completed in 23 years in 1615 A. D., 1024 A. H., but died before he could arrange it. This was done in India, and Mulla Tughrai wrote a Preface to it. Zalali Shirazi, <jr3!/i-" iJ^j, an author who died in 1541 A. D., 948 A. H. Zalim Singh, 1^^, the present raja of Kota. Zamakhshari, iSj'"^^}, vide Jar-ullah. Zaman Shah, king of Kabul and Kandahar, was the son of Taimiir Shah and grandson of the celebra- ted Ahmad Shah Abdali. He ascended the throne of Kabul after the death of his father in 1793 A. D., 1207 A. H. He advanced to Labor in 1796 A. D., 1210 A. H. and threatened to visit Delili, but soon retreated to his own dominions, tranquillity of which had been disturbed by the rebellion of one of his brothers. He was blinded by his younger brother Mahmud ohah of Hirat about the year 1800 A. D., and confined in the Bala Hisar. When in the year 1839, the British Government placed Shah Shujaa on the throne of Kabul, Zaman Shah was pro- claimed king by the Afghans in January, 1842 A. D. Zamani, Yezdi, t5«> >! (^^"Jj a Persian poet who died in 1613 A. D., 1021 A. H." Zamir, ^^-^^ the poetical name of Sayyad Hidaet 'Ali Khan styled Wasfr-uddaula Bakhshi'-ul-Mulk Asad Jang Bahadur, a relative of Alah Wardi Khan Mahabat Jang, Nawab of Bengal. He held for some time the Siibadari of Patna where he died in the beginning of the reign of Shah 'Alam, and is buried at Husainabad. Zamir, ^-*°} poetical name of Sayyad Ahmad the brother of Sayyad Imtiyaz Khan Huma. Zamir, j^"^} poetical name of Narayan Das, a Hindii. Zamiri, Maulana, a celebrated poet of Persia who flourished about the year 1538 A. D , 945 A. H. in the time of Shah Tahmasp Safwi. He is the author of the following six poems, viz., " Naz wa Nayaz," " Wamik wa Azra," "Bahar wa Khizan," '■ Laili wa Majnun," " Sikandar-nama," and " Jannat-nl-Akhiyar." He also wrote two Diwans of Kasidas called "Sahaef Yamai" and 'Isdaf Laal." He died in 1565 A. D., 973 A.H. Zamiri, Maulana, LSj..*^ ^^h'^, the poetical name of Shaikh Nizam, who was the son of Shaikh Sulaiman's sister. They were both inhabitants of Bilgram, and both were employed in the service of the emperor Humayiin after his conquest of India the second time. Shaikh Sulaimau died in the reign of the emperor Akbar, on the 1st September, 1589 A. D., 1st Zi-Ka'da, 997 A. H., and Maulana Zanm-f, who was an excellent poet, died at Siifaidiin 1595 A. D., 1003 A. H., and nawab Mubarak Khan of Dehli found the chronogram of his death to con- sist of the words " Ah ! Ah ! Nizam."
