PRINCE ERNEST AUGUSTUS WILLIAM ADOLPHUS GEORGE FREDERICK, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale in Great Britain, and Earl of Armagh in Ireland, Princo of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, K.G.. & G.C.H.; a Colonel in the British Army 1876, and a Colonel in the Austrian Army; succeeded as 3rd Duke 12 June, 1878; b. at Hanover 21 Sept. 1845; m. at Copenhagen 21 Dec. 1878, H.R.H. Princess Thyra Amélie Caroline Charlotte Anne (C.I.), 4th dau. of Christian IX. King of Denmark, and sister of H.R.H. the Princess of Wales, and has a son and dau.

Lineage

ERNEST AUGUSTUS, Duke of Cumberland, and King of Hanover, K.G. 5th son of King George III. created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale in Great Britain, and Earl Of Armagh in Ireland, 23 April, 1799, succeeded to the throne of Hanover 20 June, 1837; b. 5 June, 1771; d. 18 Nov. 1851, having m. at Strelitz, 29 May, and in London 29 Aug. 1815, Princess Frederica Caroline Sophia Alexandrina, 3rd dau. of Charles Louis Frederick, reigning Duke of Mecklenburg-Streliiz; she d. 21 June, 1841. [The Queen had been twice married before her union with the King of Hanover; 1st—26 Dec. 1793, to Prince Frederick Louis Charles, 2nd son of Frederick William, 2nd King of Prussia, d. 28 Dec. 1796; 2ndly—10 Dec. 1798, to Prince Frederick William of Solms-Brannfels, d. 13 April, 1814.] Their Majesties had an only son,

George Frederick Alexander Charles Ernest Augustus, 2nd Duke of Cumberland, last King of Hanover, K.G. succeeded 18 Nov. 1851; b. at Berlin 27 May, 1819; d. in Paris 12 June, 1878, having m. 18 Feb. 1843, Princess Mary Alexandrina Wilhelmina Catherine Charlotte Theresa Henrietta Louisa Paulina Elizabeth Frederica Georgina (V.A.), eldest daughter of Joseph, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg, and had a son and 2 daus.

Arms—The royal arms of the United Kingdom, on an inescutcheon the arms of the kingdom of Hanover (being the entire coat of George III.), differenced by a label of three points arg. charged with a fleur-de-lis az. between two St. Georges' crosses.

Crest—On a coronet a lion gnardant or, crowned with a coronet, differenced as the arms.
