106 LIVES OF THE PRESIDENTS eldest son, Ulysses S. 3d, was born in Chicago July 4, 1881. He received the appointment of cadet at the U. S. military academy, his grandfather, but a few weeks before his death, having written a let ter, strongly endorsed by Gen. Sherman, to his suc cessor who should be President of the United States at the time his namesake attained the neces sary age. He was graduated in the class of 1903, appointed second lieutenant in the engineer corps, and served with credit in the Philippine Islands. Later he was ordered to duty with the engineer battalion at Washington, and was by order of President Roosevelt also assigned to duty at the White House as a military aide-de-camp. In June, 1904, he became first lieutenant in the engineer corps, and in 1911 was appointed captain.
