He studied her intently with tightening of his pulses.

"What do you mean?" he exclaimed, moving near.

"You are in danger!"

"Perhaps!"

"No; it is certain! You are in great, immediate danger!"

He stood over her. She looked down, avoiding his gaze.

"I brought it upon you!" she continued.

"Is it merely responsibility for it that you feel?"
