Magoyemon, who had heard the story of the son he had put aside, soon realized who she was and that Chūbei, unseen for years, and now suddenly loved again, must be near and in immediate danger. He gave money to the girl and instructions as to the only possible way of escape; but a few moments later the lovers were brought back to him under arrest and ready for death, which when met nobly and in repentance wipes out disgrace. Since then the names of Umegawa and Chūbei have remained “upon the roll of those whom passion has made its prey.”
