PREFACE.
The object of the publishers in issuing the present volume was not so much to produce a new book, as to render an old and, in many respects, a good one, more suited to the present state of scholarship, and the exigences of the student.
With this view the translation has been carefully compared with Wagner's text, and with the principal commentaries; many thousand alterations, involving either closer accuracy in translation or a stricter adherence to the construction, have been introduced; and, while the brief historical and mythological notes of the original work have been retained for the use of the tyro, attention has also been paid in the editor's further illustrations to the requirements of the more advanced scholar.
