ful, and total abstinence from such things as are harmful or lead to evil, 1 Thess. 5: 22. The Brethren church has ever been a standing monument against the manufacture, sale and use of intoxicating liquors of all kinds as a beverage, admitting their use only when necessary for medical and mechanical purposes.


CHAPTER VIII.


CONFORMITY TO THE WORLD.

We believe it to be wrong, according to the letter and spirit of the Gospel, to conform to the vain fashions, maxims and customs of the world. "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God." Rom. 12: 2. "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array." 1 Tim. 2: 9. "Whose adorning, let it not be that outward
