Maximus.

[Looking up.] Gone?

Julian.

Gone.

Maximus.

Dost thou <g>now</g> see clearly?

Julian.

Now less than ever. I hang in the void over the yawning deep—midway between light and darkness. [He lies down again.] What is the empire?

Maximus.
