Caesar, Caesar,—whither are you going?

Maximus.

To freedom.

Julian.

Through darkness to light. Ah——!

[He descends into the lower galleries.

Maximus.

[Softly, looking after him.] So it has come at last!

Eutherius.

Speak, speak; what mean these hidden arts?
