ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
157

American people with their industrial democracy! For all men freedom in the market, freedom in the school, freedom in the Church, freedom in the State! Remove this monstrous evil, what a glorious future shall be ours! The whole mighty continent will come within the bounds of liberty, and the very islands of the gulf rejoice.

And, henceforth, there shall be no chain,
 Save, underneath the sea,
The wires shall murmur through the main
 Sweet songs of liberty.

The conscious stars accord above,
 The waters wild below,
And under, through the cable wove,
 Her fiery errands go.

For He who worketh high and wise,
 Nor pauses in His plan,
Will take the sun out of the skies
 Ere freedom out of man.
