§1 (1).

(a) in the case of a published[1] work, the work was first published within such parts of His Majesty's dominions as aforesaid[2]; and

(b) in the case of an unpublished work[3] the author[4] was at the date of the making of the work a British subject or resident within such parts of His Majesty's dominions as aforesaid[5];

but in no other works, except so far as the protection conferred by this Act is extended by Orders in Council thereunder relating to self-governing dominions to which this Act does not extend[6] and to foreign countries[7].


"His Majesty's dominions to which this act extends."The Act will be in force [with the exception of provisions expressly restricted to the United Kingdom[8] and subject to the right of a British possession to pass supplemental legislation relating to (i) procedure and remedies[9]; (ii) works of authors resident in such possession; (iii) works first published in such possession[10]] in—

(1) The United Kingdom[9];

(2) All British possessions other than self-governing dominions[11];

(3) Self-governing Dominions, that is to say, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and
