The regal purple and the ring of gold
As fraught with new significance, he wore:
The sceptre handed from his sires of old
Had meanings it had never known before:
To heal the sick, the sorrowful to cheer,
The poor and desolate his friends to make,
He held as sovereignty: and, void of fear,
Counted no cost too great—for England's sake.
