the lay conscience was needed to check the persecutions, inquisitions, and autosda-fé which the priesthood of Religion justified on the high plea of the eternal interests of mankind, so now the same lay conscience is needed to stop the scarcely less barbarous cruelties which that other Priesthood—the Scientific—justifies on the somewhat lower plea of our physical interests.
