The man has a full beard and a simple tunic and shorts and a knife tucked into his belt; he looks perplexed and surprised. The mermaid has a long sinuous tail and wears no clothing except for a headpiece of seaweed and conches in her long flowing hair. There are two large fish on the side that they are facing and on the other side a large octopus peers out from behind a rock at them, one tentacle placed very near the man's foot.
