The first group contains Southern spiders, Tarantula and Trap-door spi- ders. Our largest spider, the Tarantula (Mygale hentzit) lives in the Southwest- ern states. This group is represented in the Northern states by one kind only.

1. Spiders with four breathing holes, or lung-slits on the fore part of their bellies, and their mouth parts with the poison fang-claws working up and downwards
