Paul IV. would have made him a cardinal, had not the supposed interests of France prevented. De Thou affirms, that he was too good, as John de la Casa was too bad, for that honour.* Cra* shav writes concerning him, " of whom not only Thuanus, Bochellius, and other indiflferent andmoderate, but even Possevine the Jesuit, and Genebrard, that rough and bitter papist^ give most honourable testimony.^'f In his Commentary on the Epistle to Titus, on ch. i. ver. 7, he has, what he calls, Di- gressio Secunda, on the word duaMpcmfiia; and
